Bushrangers, Views and Vines

Stringybark Creek, Powers Look out, King Valley

Follow in the footsteps of Ned Kelly as you visit Stringybark Creek off the Tatong-Tolmie Road (C517), the site of the infamous gun battle beween the Kelly Gang and police. Visit The Kelly Tree before rejoining the Mansfield-Whitfield Road (C521) onto the spectacular views and breathtaking beauty of Powers Lookout. Powers Lookout is a few kilometres off the Whitfield-Mansfield Road, via an easy but narrow dirt track. Walk out to the crag and learn about Harry Powers, the so called "Gentleman Bushranger" before heading down into Whitfield and the King Valley.

Explore the wineries of the King Valley before making your way back along the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road (C521) onto the Snow Road (C522),back to Mansfield via the Hume Freeway and the Midland Highway.

Winding Roads

Jamieson to Eildon by road – one for the motorcyclists.

Stunning views and sweeping bends await you on the Jamieson- Eildon touring route. This sealed road skirts the southern boundary of Lake Eildon National Park. Take the Jamieson-Woods Point Road and spend some time in the historic township of Jamieson before doubling back and turning off at the Brewery Bridge onto the Eildon-Jamieson Road. This 63km stretch of road is steep, winding and highly scenic, offering great views of Lake Eildon and the Big River State Forest. Explore the township of Eildon then take either the unsealed Skyline road to Bonnie Doon or the Utcreek road to Alexandra, then onto Yarck, Bonnie Doon and Mansfield.

History In The Hills

Jamieson, Kevington through to Woods Point.

Head out past Jamieson (C511) and you'll feel like you've traipsed back in time. Winding dirt roads take you deep into gold rush territory.

Grab some lunch at the historic Kevington Pub and continue through to Gaffneys Creek, A1 Mine Settlement onto Woods Point, home of Australia's most famous petrol station. Built over 100 years ago, The Wood Point Fuel stop is one of the most photographed petrol station in Australia. Make your way back along the same sweeping bends, taking in the dramatic scenery heading back into Jamieson and back to Mansfield.

Mt Buller and back

NO VILLAGE ACCESS IN WINTER

Take the Mt Buller Tourist Road (C320) and spend a day on top of the world at Mt Buller. A snow covered wonderland in winter and a cool alpine escape in Summer. Mirimbah is a great place for the kids to play before heading up the mountain. Check to see if the Gnomes are in their mountain ash home as you wind your way to the Mt Buller village. Enjoy spectacular views on the summit walk or the self guided art sculpture walk. In winter, build a snowman, go for a snowshoe walk or a slide on a toboggan with the kids. Grab a bite to eat before heading back down the mountain.

Craig’s Hut and Bindaree Falls

A classic alpine drive and a perfect sampler of the High Country. The Circuit (Mt Stirling) road loops you through stands of alpine ash, snowgum plains and moutain views. Along the way you'll pass the 4WD drive route to Craigs Hut. To complete the iconic experience, take the 2 kilometre walk up to Craigs Hut for spectacular views. Take a detour to charming Bindaree Falls or drop down into the Howqua Valley and the Howqua river, one of Australia's finest fishing spots before heading back to Mansfield.
